Trying to write something new every day means some of these thoughts might end up feeling…insubstantial, to put it generously. I am not a strong, or prolific enough craftsman to empty an emotional vein each time. Also, there is stuff going on. So let me tell you about a garbage truck
There is a company in my area that has one of the weirdest slogans I have ever seen, particularly given the context of what they do. I am not going to use the name, but they are a waste management service. They collect trash. They deliver dumpsters to your house if you want one (for a fee, of course). This company does a fine job.
They have a slogan on some — I don’t believe it’s on all — of their garbage trucks. A slogan that I believe is supposed to evoke the spirit of family. I believe — and granted I’ve never bothered to research this — the slogan is an attempt to brand them as a family-oriented company. A company that believes in the right things, and acts accordingly. There is no reason to doubt that all those things are perfectly accurate.
Yet there is something incredibly funny to me about seeing garbage trucks driving around with the slogan “children first” written on them.
First for what? In what capacity is putting children first important in the realm of waste management?
Again, I appreciate the spirit, but it never fails to make me laugh, and also render me befuddled. I sit here befuddled. Any insight is wholly welcome.
Though let’s be honest, there are days I would willingly toss my children into a garbage truck, and they are certainly going in before I am if the shit goes down. So perhaps I’m overthinking this. It could easily be a “children first” situation here in the Cookson house.
