An unfortunate stomach illness waylaid my daily posting and the ensuing fogginess prevented a Michael Jordan Flu Game-like effort. Still I’m giving it an asterisk and soldier on as if nothing happened. I think that’s an important lesson to share with the kids; if you don’t meet your goals, keep going and pretend like you did and no one will question it.
When I had a job, I was pretty good about getting up in the morning, even though I also tend to stay up fairly late. I did not necessarily fit the “morning person” definition, but I usually got out of bed without hitting the snooze button, and would get stuff done.
Somewhere during the pandemic when the urgency of the work day ceased, and then even more when I stopped working and the urgency REALLY ceased, I started having a harder and harder time getting out of bed. Somewhere during that time, I discovered the iPhones let you use a song for your alarm, rather than the various annoying ring tones.
I (falsely) believed that a jolt of music hitting me in the morning would do a better job getting my ass out of bed. It has not. It has, however, given me the fun game of trying to figure out if there is some song out there that is the “perfect” morning alarm song that will get me out of bed.
By my rough estimates (and I’m sure I’m forgetting some) I’ve used about 15 songs since this discovery. I thought this might be a fun forum to both share the songs I’ve used, and solicit suggestions for new ones. Below are the songs (roughly in order, as I remember them) that I have used. Then I encourage readers to comment either directly on Substack or in the replies to the “stories” where I post the link on Instagram and Facebook and make their own suggestions.
Let’s all work together to get me out of bed and behaving like an adult!
The next one was “White Devil Rise” by Danzig, which apparently is not on any of the streaming music sites, which makes me wonder how I did it. Either way, that one was mostly done in an effort to upset my lovely wife because she made fun of the Hootie song.
And now currently going with the appropriately named “Wake Me Up.”
There you have it, dear readers. Again, leave those suggestions in the story comments, or comment on Substack and let’s get some new music in the mix that maybe, actually, gets me out of bed and behaving like a responsible adult. There is also the chance this serves as an informational post letting you know that music can be the alarm on an iPhone, in which case, you’re welcome.
iPhones can play a song as your alarm? Hmmm. I guess I’m always a bit late to pick up on things. After all, I only joined Facebook this month!
Love this list. For another Isbell rocker, you could try Hope the High Road. If you’d like to start the day a trippy, extended jam from the Dead, there is always Morning Dew.
Thanks Joel for introducing me to this new world of possibility.
Wakin on a Pretty Day - Kurt Vile. This one is not going to jolt you awake, but subtlety ease you into your morning. Think you might enjoy his personality.
