I took the boys to an escape room on Saturday afternoon. It was freezing cold outside, and we needed to get out of the house (our original plans were cancelled due to illness. Seriously, this winter has been a health mess for everyone). I had always wanted to try one, though I suspected it was going to be a bit of a mess with the boys. I tried to recruit some older kids to join us, hoping their presence might help guide Rory so I could keep Declan entertained, but everyone was either busy or sick (again, so much sick).
I geared up to give it a try, telling the them it would be an adventure. Which it was. Though not in a great way. Unfortunately, it went about as well as I expected. Rory was really into it and very excited to try and solve everything, but Declan was having none of it so I spent a bunch of time trying to settle him down which made it harder to help Rory. Suffice it to say, we did not successfully escape in our allotted 50 minutes — which led to Rory getting upset, though thankfully that was short lived.
Alas, not all the plans can be winners. We trundled back to the car with me feeling pretty frustrated. Declan was asking to go swimming, which I had planned for but was sort of hoping the escape room would be a big enough success so as to avoid. I was admittedly not in the best frame of mind when I pulled onto the entrance ramp for the Interstate. Then I heard Rory from the backseat.
“Oh no, not the highway.”
For reasons he’s never totally explained, Rory doesn’t like driving on the highway (or interstate). At this point, I really wasn’t in the mood for an argument with him, so I tried my best to not be agitated when I responded.
“I know, I’m sorry buddy, we have to go this way and we won’t be on it for very long.”
I held my breath and waited a beat…but I was not prepared for what came next.
“Okay. And life is a highway.”
Indeed little man. Indeed.
Hahaha. Rory said that?!
